On the South Eastern side of the island of Rhodes, about halfway between the bustle of Rhodes Town to the North and the tranquility of the Prasonissi peninsula to the south sits the ancient town of Lindos.
Famous for its white walled houses, beautiful sea views, perfect beach, great restaurants, lively nightlife and stunning acropolis, Lindos still attracts holiday makers who like a fun but cultured holiday with lots of options but no stress.
The secret of the no stress attitude that both visitors and local alike share is the absence of cars from the streets of the town. Lindos was built around 2500 years ago on a steep ravine heading down to the sea. Now, as it was from the outset, only donkeys are available to transport luggage and heavy goods up and down the tight maze of gleaming white streets.
The views from the ancient acropolis, built on the hill at the top of town give most visitors a moment of speechless awe. The sea from this height looks so inviting and the beach far below more inviting still. Behind you the ruins of the acropolis are worthy of many hours of exploration. A guided tour is definitely recommended. Be sure to see the ham-fisted attempts at rebuilding undertaken by the italian military during the occupation of the second world war.
Lindos is a perfect base for exploring the southern end of the island which features the more remote and authenticly greek villages that are mercifully left alone by the boisterous sun seekers of Faliraki to the north. Here in the south of Rhodes you can find the authentic island, wander the lavender fields and taste the fresh honey that is one of the greatest harvests of this magical isle.
