Emponas is the most important grape-producing village on the island of Rhodes - if you come around harvest time you will find streets full of baskets and courtyards spread with raisins soaking up in the sun. The smell of grape must will engulf you as soon as you enter the village. Winemaking fever reigns at the Emery winery, the largest in the village, where guided tours and wine-tasting are on offer. There are also another three traditional wineries run by small local producers (Kounakis, Alexandris and Merkouris), where you can sample the local varieties, as well as souma. Moving on to the village centre, there is an abundance of folklore in the air.
Coaches stop at the parking area in the square to unload rowdy crowds with cameras in hand. They wander around the small back alleys, gaze at the colourful hand-woven rugs and other popular art in tourist shops, and visit the impressive Folk Museum. Finally, they all make their way -where else?- to the meat taverna of the Bakis brothers, one of the most famous on the island, with local kid spare ribs, country-style sausages and freshly-cut French fries.
If you come at high season, you are also quite likely to come across a dance group dressed up in traditional clothes. The dance skills of the village people are well-known to all and they are said never to miss a local feast. Emponas may not have any picturesque architectural features, however it is one of the most popular suggestions for a trip inland in Rhodes that combines folklore, a lively atmosphere and good food. It's a village full of life all year round, with two petrol stations, several tavernas, a mini market and various shops.
A Map of Rhodes is always useful when you are visiting the island while two of the most amazing hotels that you could choose for your holidays are Louis Colossos and Belair Beach.
Hello! My name is Sifis Mamounakis and I was born in the beautiful island of Crete and more specifically in Chania, one of the most beautiful locations of Crete. Although I am a proud Cretan I really like to travel and there are too many places all over Greece that I adore. Here, I will try to share my experiences with you and I would really like to learn about yours too.
